2025 marks the 20th anniversary of the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS). In the last two decades, the Internet has evolved faster than we could have imagined, transforming our societies and becoming the foundational infrastructure for our global digital world.
This rapid transformation has brought new challenges, from new digital divides to concerns about online safety, misinformation, and the concentration of commercial power. This milestone is a critical opportunity for decisive action to shape the future of our increasingly digital society.
Our Path Forward: Implementation
We believe the best way to navigate today’s challenges is to build upon the proven success of the WSIS framework. The original WSIS Plan of Action was designed to be flexible and technology-neutral, making it uniquely suited to address both existing and emerging challenges through focused, innovative implementation. By treating the Action Lines as a living framework, we can focus our collective energy on concrete actions that deliver real progress.
Our Strategic Priorities
Our perspective paper outlines a path forward centered on three key areas:
- Protecting the Internet’s Foundational Principles by affirming its open, global, secure, and trustworthy nature and ensuring it empowers all people with the ability to connect, innovate, and share.
- Strengthening Multistakeholder Cooperation by re-committing to this model as the most effective way to govern the Internet, which includes renewing and evolving the Internet Governance Forum (IGF).
- Focusing the WSIS+20 Review on implementing the existing Action Lines, ensuring the Global Digital Compact complements and does not duplicate this work, and leveraging the Internet to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.
